The Rant Shack (Wherein We Rant) Mike Says: (04/01/04) HAPPY APRIL FOOL'S FROM FOOL COURT PRESS! Hey, it's our first April Fool's here at the Nice Guy site. Time to finally start the (now) annual tradition Tim and I have been talking about for a while...that every April 1st, our Nice Guy strip will be some kind of alternate reality version of the Nice Guy characters. To start things off, we thought we'd do a little gender bending, and see what would happen if our guys were girls (and our girl was a guy). Hence the "The Nice Girl" strip in the Comics! section. Also, you may have noted a little South Park action on our home page, showing that interpretation of our characters. That was cranked out Photoshop-style by my roommate and member of Team Nice Guy Aaron Storck. Thanks, Aaron! So mark it on your calendars. Now you have something to look forward to every year! The Nice Guy April Fool's update! And all this time you've just been counting the days until your birthday... NICE GUY ONLINE RAISES BAR AGAIN Just thought I'd mention that February ended up being our biggest Nice Guy month ever, surpassing all previous numbers for hits and visitors. It's good to be us. Thanks again, everybody!!! AND THE STONE KEEPS ON ROLLING Sorry there's not too much more this time around, folks, but I'm afraid your webmaster here is still dealing with health stuff. Thought for sure I was going to FREAKIN' DIE last Friday night. Bad time to have that hit, on a Friday night when you can't reach your doctor and you've only got a couple of pain pills left. But I muddled through. Looks like I'm slated for surgery (if I can last that long) on April 14th. So you'll likely see a slightly earlier Nice Guy update, since I probably won't be too coherent on the night of the 14th to put up Nice Guy stuff. Sounds like I may be out of work for a couple of weeks, but sounds like I may not be in that great a mood during that time, so that probably sacks the idea of getting loads of Nice Guy stuff done. Probably more time with my DVD player instead. Or my X-Box. If I can get my DVD drive on the X-Box replaced in time. It's good to be a grown-up, isn't it?. SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED Oh, speaking of DVDs, though...thanks to all my time on the couch, and the fact that I just about used up all my other TV show DVDs, I did a rental on the show "Alias". I've been hearing people talk about it forever, but I never got around to watching it. Rented the first season. Woah!!! I love this show! Totally addictive. Designed to be that way, actually...they tend to leave you with a massive cliffhanger at the end of episodes so you just have to watch the next one. Very smart, very exciting, very whacked show...and so full of guest stars! The best one of season one was Quentin Tarantino, showing up for a two-part "Die Hard" episode as a really slick bad guy. Think I'll have to rent season two after this surgery thing happens. Just thought I'd plug it for you in case you haven't seen it. I guarantee fun. Put it on your list.
COME AND SAVE ME TONIGHT Oh, and you may have noticed between last update an this one that there are a lot of banner ads for "Saving Angel" on this site. There's a reason for that. I want to save Angel. The word came down that "Angel", the spinoff from the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" show, will not be coming back next season. It got the ax from the WB, and they let creator Joss Whedon know that early so he'd have a chance with these last 6 episodes to wrap up the show. Well, as expected, the fans have gone nuts, and don't want the show to be cancelled. Mainly because it's...I don't know...good? So there are a number of fan organizations that have gotten together to try and save the show, to convince the WB to change their mind or convince another network to pick it up. I just can't imagine TV without a Joss Whedon show on the air. As I've said here before, he's my creative hero, a master storyteller who knows how to entertain like no one else. He brought a smart, slick voice to TV that was missing, and now that Buffy ended and Firefly got canned (soon to return as the film "Serenity", as we've discussed before, and filming starts this June), Angel was our last connection to the Power That Be (Joss). A lot of us really, really don't want to let it go.
So, to this end, The Nice Guy has joined the fight, and put our considerable (huh?) power behind the campaign to keep Angel alive. You'll be seeing these banners for SavingAngel.org--one of the main groups leading the fight--on our site until this thing is decided one way or the other. So far the group has organized fans into postcard writing campaigns, paid for billboard ads, billboard trucks, full-page ads in the trades, and organized rallies in L.A. They're really going all out. So I figured the least we could do is steer some people their way. Power to you, folks! The good fight, yeah? EX HALEN, IN HALEN In case you haven't heard the news, let me be the first to tell you. Van Halen is back. After years of waiting, VH fans were shocked and rocked to hear the news a couple of days back the Van Halen has teamed up again with Sammy Hagar and have concert dates set for this summer. Sounds like there's a new "best of" album in the works that will have a new song from the boys, and hopefully a new album won't be too far away after that. They said it couldn't be done. But the 5150 boys are back.
Some folks aren't too pleased, as they've been holding out for the band to reunite with original front man David Lee Roth. I'd have been okay with that, too, but I must admit, the "Van Hagar" era was more my thing, as that was the end of high school for me and into college (and deep into my long hair, jean jacket rocker phase). So I'm giddy, at least. If I'm back in Sac by then, and if there's any way I can get my hands on tickets, I'm so there. Haven't seen them live since...was it '90? '91? I know I was with my buddy Joel. It's going to be great to see the guys all together again. Let's see if I can enjoy their music WITHOUT the Southern Comfort and the Marlboros this time.
