Write to the Nice Guys at theniceguy@theniceguycomic.com
Hey, it's been a while since I've gotten around to answering fan mail, hasn't it? Well, let's just fix that! As a reminder, we're anxious to get any feedback from you fine folk, and hear whatever you have to say, be it good, bad or ugly. So please...drop us a line! Subject: Very nice, guy... Your
comic was recommended to me by a friend. I loved it so much that Keep up the good work. Darryl Comixpedia "G.A.A.K: Groovy Ass Alien Kreatures". It's like "ET"--With teeth! And before I get to answering that, let me go ahead and post Darryl's Nice Guy review here, because we thought it was just that swell: Believe me when I tell you, my friends, because I pass this way but once--You will love THE NICE GUY by Tim Watts and Mike O'Connell. The very first image you see when going to read this comic, that of a guy holding some flowers while being rained on, says it all--Nice guy's finish last. THE NICE GUY is a comic that reads like the very best John Cusack movies (and no, that's not a contradiction in terms) of the 80's like "Say Anything". THE NICE GUY is about Jeff who is the friend of, support to, and shoulder to cry on for every woman he knows. Jeff loves Becki, a female friend, but Becki likes bad boys, losers, and fixer uppers. So of course she never recognizes Jeff's feelings for her. So who does Jeff turn to with his love woes? Why his best friends, of course. That would be Frank, who's usually pissed off about something and not afraid to tell you about it, and Peg, the laid back "dude-donis". Are you getting that John Cusack feeling yet? You will when you read THE NICE GUY. And if you don't recognize something you've said or done while hanging out with your friends while reading this comic, then your not reading it carefully enough. The
artwork is pleasantly simple and the writing is clever. The bit about
the "mysterious third Olsen Twin" (You know? Mary, Kate, AND
Ashley) in the latest installment "Olsen Twins Powers Activate"
made me laugh. It'll make you laugh too. Wow. First of all, glad that you found your way to us, Darryl, and that you're enjoying The Nice Guy. Happier still to hear that you were referred to it be a friend (we are so the kings of word of mouth!). Nice to see the Nice Guy network working. But thanks, most especially, for such a shining review. I can think of no greater compliment than any kind of comparison to John Cusack movies. Funny you should mention the artwork being pleasantly simple. So is Tim! What a coincidence! Seriously, though, you really nailed the NG concept and characters in the review, and I'm glad to hear that someone's getting the identification point of this book--that it's about real people that you're likely to recognize. Also nice to get some feedback from a fellow strip creator, too, and I've had a lot of fun checking out G.A.A.K. (as, I hope, will other people who read this letter page and follow the link). Best of luck with that, and thanks again for your ongoing Nice Guy support. Print comic, just months away! Hey Nice Guy, I just wanted you to know that you have a new fan. I love it! I'd say it is one of my favourties on the net. I also wanted to say that for a dude, you got the way a girl thinks down to a "T". So uh, keep writing; it is some funny shit and makes those bad days not so bad. Thanks. Jade We're always happy to have a new fan. Welcome aboard, Jade! Yet another new female fan for a comic we were afraid would have male-only appeal. Sweet! Glad to hear, as well, that we're not too off in the "girl-think" department. As a lot of this book is about the male struggle to understand women, I've been expecting some retaliatory letters accusing us of chick-bashing. So far, hasn't happened. Maybe we just haven't hit upon that perfect strip that will unleash it all. If that happens, be sure to let us know. Until then, hope you're enjoying being on the mailing list, and please...don't be a stranger! Hi Michael; Thank
you so much for the wonderful email, that certainly made my day I
just finished reading over yours and Tim's site and checking out the Would
you mind if I link to your site? All the best and again thank you The thanks are all mine, Kim. Your adding us to your site has gotten us a steady stream of hits from north of the border. We so appreciate it! Kim here was an example of us not waiting around for readers to discover us. I just happened to be bouncing around some sites, looking at links, and stumbled upon Kim's extremely entertaining weblog, "The G Spot". Something she had posted up there made me laugh, so I thought I'd return the favor and send her a link to TNG page. Thankfully, it actually seems to have made her laugh. Boy, could that have been embarrassing. If you're looking for a few good laughs and some links to crazy sites you never would have found on your own, drop in and check out the G Spot. Much fun to be had. And in case you hadn't noticed, Kim, you've been linked into the Nice Guy links page as well, as turnabout is fair play, and we're all about fair play. Again, glad you've enjoyed the site, and hope you continue to. Subject: Firefly I
happen to agree 100% with you on firefly. I've been a fan since Train
Job.
All right! Someone's actually reading my rants! So you were one of the faithful of us who stuck it out with Firefly from the beginning, huh? With Fox showing all the eps out of order and everything? Man, when you watch them all in the right order, the show makes so much more sense. Fox really did screw the show right from the get-go. Oh, well. Your hopes are the same as mine, that the (hopefully) forthcoming movie will be popular enough to get the series back on. My only hope is that it happens fast enough so that all the main actors aren't off doing other things with their careers. You really don't want to mess with the dynamic of the show by losing any one of those characters. In case you haven't checked the Firefly movie rumor mill lately, there's a bit of excitement happening. Universal, who has the rights to the movie, has just added a movie called "Serenity" to the Coming Soon section of their web site--though no details are given besides the title. It's been rumored for a while that the working title for the Firefly movie is "Serenity", so we hope that's a right connection. I'm still thinking we'll rise again... And this is a good opportunity to mention again that you all ought to try out the show Firefly if you haven't already. The whole series is out on DVD, and I still consider it one of the best-written shows I've ever been a fan of. Lots of people got this DVD set for Christmas from both me and my roommate, and we've made quite a few converts that are, like us, ticked off that it got cancelled. At least enjoy the 13 episodes there are to see. And let me know what you think! Thanks for being a Rant-reader, James, and for being a fellow Firefly fan. You know that people who are both Firefly and Nice Guy fans are considered by the scientific community to be amongst the wisest, most cunning and sexually appealing people on Earth? It's true! Pick up a copy of Omni sometime and look it up. Subject: This might be the perfect comic! Wow….after seeing the post on Journey’s official message board, I viewed all of your comics, and I am blown away! I can’t wait to see your next piece! I think I may have a new favorite online comic here! Rock on, Eric This, by the way, is a lesson in niche marketing. Having done the strip "One Night Will Remind You", it occurred to me that it would probably go over well with Journey fans. So I went to the official Journey site and got onto the message board and posted the link to the comic...which led to a bunch of message board responses and e-mail, all very positive. And as if this wasn't cool enough, fans from that board then started posting the link on other Journey boards. In short? Journey fans kick ass! And we'll let Eric's letter represent them. Thanks, Eric! The perfect comic? I don't know about that. Well, then again, I don't want to be rude. So, okay. Let's go with your assessment. Very happy you enjoyed all the NG strips (even the ones lamely colored by me before J'amal came along and classed up the joint). I just wish we had more time to get up new stuff more than every two weeks. But since we haven't gotten rich and famous off this (yet) and still have to deal with our day jobs, we'll just have to hope loyal fans like yourself are willing to wait around a couple of weeks for us each time. We are thinking about going weekly for the month of May, though...but that's another story. Mainly, just wanted to say thanks for your extra-kind words (we love blowing people away. Oh, and impressing them with comics, too...) and say welcome aboard. Hope you'll keep an eye out for the Nice Guy comic book due out this summer. Stay tuned right here for more details. And on your advice, sir...rock on we shall. Way too funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dave See? We don't ask you to write overly articulate literary explorations of the Nice Guy. We don't need several pages of praise. Something simple and to the point with lots and lots of exclamation points will do just fine. Thanks, Dave. In three words you've hit upon exactly what we're trying to make of this comic. Glad to hear that you think we're pulling it off. Welcome to the family. And when you say "funny"...you mean funny like a clown? Like I amuse you? Like I'm here to amuse you? Is that it? Never mind. I don't do a very good Joe Pesci impersonation. I'm much better at Joe Penny. You know, the guy from Riptide? Check this out. Ahem. "Cody! Get the copter! I'll see if the Ro-Boz can defuse the bomb!" No? Okay, let's move on... A couple of E-mails from Clare:mail #1: Subject: Feedback... I liked 976-JEFF... funnier than the first 2... it had a special funny kick at the end that I like w/ comics! E-mail #2: Subject: More Feedback... They got better as I got along... the first two weren't as amusing... but the improvement is nice! I love it! Keep on keepin' on~CM Excellent! Someone actually rating us as she's reading. I like it. Glad to hear we got better, Clare, and not the other way around. We're trying to avoid that trend. Our plan is to keep getting better until we run out of ideas and plateau, and then continue on for a couple of years after that just for the money, like X-Files, and then not be able to give it up when it's all going under, so we'll try a spinoff series like "Hey, It's Frank!" or "Peg's Place" or something that'll really tank, and then we'll both develop problems with prescription painkillers, unable to deal with losing the spotlight, the limos, the women and the cash. But then I'll make a comeback with my own successful talk show and Tim will find peace in the simple farming life. That's our plan, at least. We'll see how it goes. Until then...keep that feedback coming! Subject: Just visited your site... ...
and I love the concept guys. I relate to just -Greg
Bailey- Excellent! More feedback from other creators! Love it! Glad you found us at Top Cow. Hope you've had a chance to check out Common Grounds, too, as it's well worth your time. Always happy to see someone who relates to the Nice Guy instead of the angry mail from guys who want to beat up Jeff for being such a wuss. Not easy being one of us, is it? Had a chance to check out some of your site. Looks great! Very impressed by the art. I'll keep checking back to see if the whole site's back up. Yeah, I'd definitely love to see some comics including these characters. Be a proud part of the online comics revolution! I know I love being so. Glad you found us, Greg, and hope you're planning to stick around for a while. At least until we get that big movie or TV deal. Then you can feel free to ditch us and talk about how we've gotten big heads and have forgotten the fan base, etc. Deal? :) That's all for the mail bag this time. Be sure to keep those cards and letters...okay, there are no cards or letters. Please keep the e-mails coming. And no, those don't actually require a "bag", but there are a couple of folders involved. So you get the idea. Keep letting your friends know about the Nice Guy! Michael O'Connell - He Who Writes It.
