Write to the Nice Guys at theniceguy@theniceguycomic.com

Welcome to the first edition of the new Nice Guy mail page. We figured this might be a nice way to share some of the fan mail we've gotten, and a convenient way to answer some of those e-mails I'm so behind on as well. Two birds, you know... We'll try to do this semi-regularly, so if you haven't already, be sure to drop us a line and let us know what you think about the site, the characters, the strips, Tim's art, the Kings' chances to beat the Lakers this year...whatever.

So, on with the letters! Seriously, we get fan mail! We're not making these up!

Dear Nice Guys:

Michael. Tim. You two are without a doubt the sexiest men I've ever seen. Your stunning visages in pencil and ink aside, you have no idea how unbearably attractive talent and a sense of humor are. I look forward to every Nice Guy update. I read them in the tub on my laptop, and I dream that you're both there, writing and drawing them in my bathroom, just for me. I think about you when I'm at work. In traffic. In the quiet of the night. I can't get you two out of my mind.

I want to meet you. Both of you. Name the night. I'll cook for you both, we'll get to know each other, share and laugh, and see where it all leads. Please answer me soon. I've waited long enough. I'm all yours.

The woman of both your dreams--

Sheena

Yeah, okay, I made that one up. But that's the only one! I swear!

Hello, this is Brian Stafford, you may know me from the crazy rantings on the comic gallery discussion page. You are probably aware that i am friends with Sheldon, a guy you work with at [A MAJOR INSURANCE COMPANY]. I have received the original art that you gave Sheldon to give to me as a present. I have already thanked Sheldon, and i would also like to thank you and Tim Watts for this tremendous gift.

So thank you!

-Brian
Geekier Than Thou

You do realize that you and I are the only ones who READ the Comic Gallery discussion page, right? Yeah, THAT was a great marketing move...

No problem, Brian, and glad you liked it! Sheldon's the man! Tim was more than happy to do it for you, too.

For those of you here who are NOT Brian... My co-worker Sheldon (used to work in the same department. Now he's in liability. I'm in auto damage. Together, we solve crimes), who's a Nice Guy fan, turned his buddy Brian into an even BIGGER Nice Guy fan. Sheldon came up to me and asked if Tim would be willing to do an original piece of art for Brian that he (Sheldon) could frame and give to him (Brian) as a Christmas gift. Tim, all about the fans as he is, thought it was a swell idea. He called me along the way and asked if Sheldon wanted it to have a Christmas theme. Sheldon wanted Tim to go with his instincts. So Tim headed to a strip bar and got piss drunk and got arrested. I'm sorry, wrong instincts. Tim went for a Christmas shot...and then remembered that we'd been talking about changing up the gateway and home pages for the holidays with Christmas art, and thought what he did would be perfect for the occasion. He had me check with Sheldon, again, to make sure Brian wouldn't feel like he was getting UNoriginal art if it got double use and ended up on the page. I don't think Brian minded at all. So for those of you who saw the Christmas Nice Guy gang shot last update...the original pencil and ink went to Brian, autographed by both Tim and I.

And then Brian and I met by total accident in a shop, like, days later. Small world, this San Diego...

Anyway, glad, again, that you liked it, Brian. It was great to meet you, and you're now officially on the Nice Guy mailing list. Thanks for liking our stuff! Be sure to show up and say hi at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, where you can even thank Tim in person. Unless he skips to go to a strip club. And gets piss drunk. And gets arrested...

Hiya Michael!

Thanks for writing to me. I'm glad to help however I can for what I
think is a great comic that can appeal to anyone. And thanks for adding
me to the mailing list. It helps to be reminded as I often forget what
day it is. ;D

I hope you don't mind, but I've been posting about the Nice Guy on
herorealm already, usually whenever you update your site with new stuff.
I haven't gotten any responses yet, but it'll just take time. Who
knows, people may be checking out your site without posting any replies.
Hopefully, there'll be more response once you officially post there.

Oh, and I'd love to get a copy of the flyer so I can post it up around
Sac State.

Talk to you later!

-Sarah-

Thanks again, Sarah. And we have gotten responses from Herorealm browsers. Our server's nifty traffic tracker says so (I always feel like...somebody's WAAAtching meeee...). While no one has specifically written and said "I saw your flyer at Sac State!", I know those fans are checking it out, too. I went to Sac State, so I know that sometimes Sac State students can be a little slow... And not many of them can read, either, so maybe that's the reason. I kid! I kid!

And speaking of Sarah, let's everyone say hello to her, as she's the first recipient of the official:

Awarded to

SARAH HASLETT

Sarah is still holding on to the title of our #1 Nice Guy fan! A student and talented writer in Sacramento, Sarah discovered TNG and showed up at the A-1 Comics NG appearance with a printed online NG strip for Tim to sign. She wrote Tim a nice letter, which he advised me of, and I gave her a write back to thank her for her support. Since then, Sarah has not only linked TNG off her own site, but has been posting links in other comic-friendly sites, sending me useful links for NG marketing, and generally spreading the good news about Jeff and friends. She even had a project to do in an internet class where she put together a goodie bag for subscribers to the online newsletter that included the Nice Guy flyer with a Nice Guy strip printed on the back. An invaluable asset to Team Nice Guy, Sarah has richly deserved the honor of being the first Nice Guy Pimp. Well, done, Sarah! Thanks for your support and help! Hope you and your own "Nice Guy" get a chance to make it to San Diego this year to check out the Nice Guy table.

And I promise...I'll answer your e-mails real soon. GOD I suck at keeping up with mail...

Guys,

Loved the "Olsen Twin Powers - Activate!" strip. I can just see these guys sitting around discussing them, considering how rich these two young women are and how nice they've developed since their days on Full House. (not that I follow their career much... whistle whistle whistle...). :D

Hey, if the first book takes off well, maybe a follow up thing could be a compilation of the online strips or something.

Martin

Thanks, Martin! Always a pleasure to get your opinions and observations. Pervert.

Funny you should mention that compilation idea. Not that we're getting ahead of ourselves or anything (naawww), but Tim and I have discussed exactly such a product. We're thinking that might be our first Nice Guy hardcover. And since the strips started out in color, it'd be really cool to print the book in color, too. And that costs HOW much Tim, o print guru thou art? Hmm. This thing had REALLY better take off...

Subject: "Butt Monkey?" You bet!

(RE: "Days of Wine and Poody)

I love the focus on Becki. She is such a terd. And better yet Jeff is, too. They both fit the disturbing trend of "Butt Monkey." Both are abused by their behaviors. I just can't stand being the observer of such an embarrassing display of gullibility and thick-headedness. Becki is so determined to get the right (bad) guy while Jeff is so determined to stand by old-fashioned (or shall I say outdated) principals of kindness. I am sickened. I am saddened. but most of all, I am ... looking forward to the next strip.

Thank you for such a wonderful treat. You bet we will be there to visit Tim,
Sincerely
Aaron Thompson

Hey, A.T.! How your wife and Tim's kids? Ah, a keen observer of human behavior, as always. Glad to see you're seeing beneath. It IS a very annoying relationship, isn't it? And why? Because we've all #$%@ had one!! Maybe one day they'll both find a good therapist and realize they were meant for each other. At least, we hope to keep everyone THINKING that...manipulating you to keep coming back, clinging to that thread of hope. AH ha ha ha! You're all our puppets!!

Hey, and you guys DIDN'T show up and see Tim at A-1. What, do you have two kids or something?

Hey Mike, Mr Comic guru guy :-)..

Your site look so good. Your new colorist does an excellent job. I like the
new strips too! The karaoke one is hilarious, I opened it at work and
laughed my ass off.

Merry Christmas to you and all you love,

Jeni

Does it count as fan mail if it comes from your roommate's girlfriend? Oh, what the heck...got to throw Jeni in, because she's the one that created the very first piece of Nice Guy merchandise...the Nice Guy tee shirt (using the color banner from the top of the page) she made me for Christmas. That was the coolest! Thanks again, and glad we're making your co-workers suspect you're unstable. Anything we can do to help your career. Hope to get to see you in Seattle in January. Go Kings! And, go Sonics, too, of course. Wait, if they BOTH go...

And thanks for noticing that J'amal's colors look GREAT! Especially since he re-did all the site art for this update. We love having that guy around. You'll see more of his work in the first issue of the Nice Guy comic. Which, if for nothing else than making the shirt, you MAY just get a free copy of...

Simply Perfect!

I recently picked up one of your cards at A-1 Comics in Sac and didn't expect to actually find time to look up the website, but I'm glad I did.

The comic is a fantastic idea and as the nice guy I can totally relate and that's what makes it so great.

Similar to how office junkies can relate to Dilbert, your comic speaks to me as a 20 year old college student.

As for the comics you've got up right now, I could totally see it as a great comic strip, but I'd like to see what potential it has as longer, comic book size.

Thanks!

JPLewis

Wow, thanks, J.P.! And also, thanks to our pal Brian Peets at A-1 Comics for passing out the cards for us, so we can find new fans like J.P.

Wait, a college student? Do you go to Sac State? How did you read the strip? I kid!!!

It's just the kind of relating you're talking about that seems to be pulling in Nice Guy fans (male and female alike). Tim has said it best...we've all got a little Jeff in us. And too much Frank in us. And not nearly enough Peg in us. Or was it a little Frank and too much Jeff? I don't usually listen too close when Tim's talking. And start saving your pennies now, because if your dream is to check out TNG in a longer, comic size, your wish is coming true. Stay...as they say...tuned!

Oh, and apologies, by the way, to those great early Nice Guy fans at the very start--like Roxanne, Casey and Autumn, to name a few--whose e-mails were lost when we switched from our suck server to this new, cool one. You all had some very nice things to say, and early-on support and opinion, that I wish I could post up here...Casey's suggestion of Jeff developing a spanking fetish notwithstanding. Try writing again...maybe I'll get my chance. Nice Girls kick ass!

And if you wrote to us and didn't see your letter this time, fret not. We can't blow the whole wad in one sitting! Yours may yet be coming. Unless you were that guy talking about our mothers...

Okay, folks, that's it for this time. Keep checking back for more fan mail (maybe yours!) to come, more Pimp Awards (again, you could be one! Get pimping!), and, of course, more Nice Guy. Until next time, then.

Michael O'Connell - The one who can't draw. But isn't bitter. He swears.
